Why We Watch Football and Eat Chicken Wings
Classic combination ranks with baseball and apple pie
As we head into college football playoffs, bowl games and the pro football season is ramping up, we wanted to take a look at how chicken wings and football have become a tradition – from the origin of the Buffalo Wing to how it became synonymous with football.
The Anchor Bar
The origins of the Buffalo wing begin in 1964, Teressa Bellissimo prepared the first “Buffalo Wings” at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo. There’s some dispute between father and son as to how and why the Buffalo Wing came to be… we’re not sure who to believe but 55 years later, we’re proud to serve our take on of one of America’s favorite shareable food. Why Do We Watch Football and Eat Chicken Wings?
In the late 1980s and 1990s the NFL’s Buffalo Bills became a dominant force. According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, “starting in 1988, the Bills won five AFC Eastern titles in six years and became the only team ever to play in four straight Super Bowl.” So why do we eat chicken wings and watch football? Here’s what we think happened. As fans of different teams travelled to Buffalo, we think that they got a taste of Buffalo’s local flavor at tailgate parties and Buffalo restaurants. Pizza restaurants and delivery joints latched on to the trend and added them to their menus for fans to devour. Really though, it doesn’t matter how it happened because we LOVE that Buffalo Wings have made their way to “the Good Land” here in Wisconsin.
